A 57-year-old California man died while snorkeling in Kaanapali on Friday morning, Maui police said Monday.

Police responded to the beach area at 130 Kai Malina Parkway at about 11:10 a.m. Friday following reports of an unresponsive male snorkeler found in the water.

Bystanders were performing life-saving measures on the man until fire and medic personnel took over but were unable to revive the man.

He was identified as Howard Hoo of Mountain View, Calif.

An autopsy has been scheduled, police said, adding that an investigation is ongoing and that no additional information is available.
